MCA-Mozambique Announces Resumption of Construction of the New Licungo River Bridge and Mocuba Bypass

On 27 January 2026, Millennium Challenge Account – Mozambique — MCA-M, through its Executive Director, Dr. Augusta Maita Mendes, announced in the city of Mocuba, Zambézia Province, the resumption of Compact II activities and, consequently, the restart of the Project for the Construction of the New Licungo River Bridge and the Mocuba Bypass.

The initiative is part of the Connectivity and Rural Transport Project — CTR, one of the strategic projects under the new Compact, aimed at improving transport infrastructure and rural connectivity.

During the meeting with local families, the reasons that led to the suspension of activities in 2025, the communication challenges faced during that period and the next steps planned for the implementation of Compact II were shared.

On the occasion, the MCA-M Executive Director witnessed the Declaration of the Resettlement Eligibility Moratorium, led by the Mayor of Mocuba Municipal Council, Manuela de Jesus Francisco Varela Opincai, and the Administrator of Mocuba District, Adelina Dulce Norberto Tavares.

The event was attended by representatives of the Provincial, District and Municipal Governments, community leaders, members of the public and media representatives, reinforcing MCA-M’s commitment to the participation of local communities, transparency and inclusive development.

On 28 January, a similarly relevant event will take place in Mocuba’s Northern Zone, as part of the same communication and community engagement process.
